It's frustrating since they don't teach you these things at uni (about the MBR etc...), though you would think it a very worthwhile subject. I suppose the issues are how to access BIOS information and how the formatting of the first sector of the harddrive is done for various Operating systems.
No sweat, I've actually been enjoying playing with Linux again (installed Suse, which went like a whistle). There's a package, called "XAMPP" which takes care of the web server (installs Apache, PHP, PERL, mySQL in one go) ... again, installation was just a matter of typing in a few commands. Though I suspect it's probably best used for developing projects, due to security issues.
So now I can happily (:))work on my PHP files at home ... it's sad really.
Next step is to download INN software and explore NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol).
Have you ever used PEAR (a PHP extension) or the libcurl package? Usenet PHP appications seem to use this package a lot to retrieve data from remote sites... seems quite powerful...
